The paparazzi trend began in the early 2000s when photographs of celebrities doing everyday tasks became popular. This led to many new photographers becoming paparazzi that chased after celebrities, often going to extremes for any photos.

When the recession hit in 2008, demand for magazines featuring paparazzi photos declined. However, celebrities continued to be chased by the paparazzi for photos because the paparazzi were desperate to be paid as media companies started paying them less. Getting an exclusive shot became the crucial goal for a paparazzo.

Here are some of the celebrity-paparazzi incidents over the years from the early 2000s to today.
Britney Spears - Feb 2007
Britney Spears attacks one of the paparazzi’s SUV with a green umbrella after being swarmed by a group of them at a gas station. The paparazzi were following Spears at a time during her custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline and after recently shaving her head at an LA salon.

Sean Penn - 2009
Sean Penn was charged with misdemeanor battery after allegedly kicking a photographer in the leg in Brentwood, CA. In another incident, Penn dangled a photographer by the ankles off a ninth-floor hotel balcony in Macau. Penn fled to Hong Kong and was later pardoned.

Alec Baldwin - June 2012
Baldwin shoved a New York Daily News photographer while picking up his marriage license with Hilaria Thomas on June 20, 2012. Nine days later, he had a loud argument with another photographer blocking entrance to his apartment building.

Justin Bieber - 2012
On July 6, 2012, Bieber was speeding to avoid the paparazzi who was also speeding on the highway. There have also been a few car accidents since then in which Bieber was backing out his car while leaving a location.

Katy Perry - 2014
At a beach in Australia, a group of male photographers followed Perry, to the point of drawing the attention of other passersby as she repeatedly walked away with refusals to take pictures. She called them out later as "perverted" and "disgusting" on Twitter.
